Clay Heads

The topic for my Art Foundation Course has been focused on portraiture and heads. These clay heads were created during one of my 3d classes. The head is yet to be developed, adding more facial features and defining areas.
Working with clay- This is the first time I have properly worked with clay. To begin with the air needed to be knocked out the clay, this would later prevent the clay from cracking or exploding in the kilm. I then created two basic forms, a cylinder to create the neck and an egg shape for the head. I attached these together and then was able to mould, add pieces and cut away from places. I used a member of my class to create my head from. I used basic measuring techniques using the tools I had to hand to get everything in proportion.
I did not smooth out any areas or define any features in full detail. I used a rough method of adding chunks and cutting away if there was to much weight in places. I used my fingers to attach pieces, adding a rough texture. In my next session i will add more features such as the eyes and define other parts of the face. However I like the rough texture that has been gained and the overall shape of the head is strong and works well.
